The golf gods.  They think they are so funny.  “So you think it’s hot out here, do ya’?  You don’t like 100 degrees and 20 mile per hour winds?  Well, let’s just drop it down to 55, keep the wind, throw in some rain right before the tournament to make it nice and damp, AND we’ll leave the clouds so you feel absolutely NO warmth?  We’ll see how they like that!”  Yeah, thanks a lot.

That is kind of how it felt yesterday.  On Tuesday we played in brutal heat, and by Thursday we realized none of us had packed enough clothes to stay warm.  But, as long as it’s not pouring down rain, we play.  While it was the “Ark City” Invitational, the tournament was actually played in Winfield at Quail Ridge Golf Course, one of the nicer public courses in South Central Kansas.  And once again, in spite of the tough conditions, our girls toughed it out and did their best.  I was proud of them and how they handled the elements, but we were all pretty happy when the 9-hole round was over and we were back in the clubhouse.

The most exciting part of the tournament was the fact that, for the first time since 2020, an East High Blue Ace earned a varsity medal in girls golf.  Junior Jillian Hutchinson shot a 57 to finish in 10th place.  All of us were pretty excited for her.  As a team we finished in 4th place with a score of 278, and here are the individual scores from yesterday:

  • Jillian Hutchinson, 57, 10th place
  • Faith Mantzke, 72, 23rd
  • Natalie Schafer, 74, T24th
  • Beija Cousens, 75, 26th
  • Mackenzie Wright, 76, T27th
  • Violet Rice, 81, 29th

The low individual for the tournament was Savanna Nickum of Winfield, with a score of 42.  Pretty good considering the conditions.  For complete results, click here.

The girls have two tournaments next week: one at Rolling Hills Country Club; the other at Sim Park.  Both will be 18 hole events with some really good schools from around the area and state.  Both will be very good tests for us.
